You can't distinguish the transmission or rear from the VIN number, only the engine, body style, year and point of assembly:

The 1 = Chevrolet motor division
The W is series = Malibu/El Camino
The 80 = 2 door pickup delivery
H= engine 305 CI 4 barrel carb (if this is the original engine in the car)
A= build year 1980
D= assembly plant Doraville, GA
400326= sequential build number at plant

The axle code is on a tag on the differential itself, the transmission code is stamped on the transmission's governor cover.
