I've used it for 27 years with no issue. I've never heard anything like that. Maybe I've never had problems since I've always used as preventive maintenance.

There used to be a professional strength product from Chevron back in the late 90's. I put a bottle in a friends Sunbird with a 3.1 that was running rough. We drove it across town to pick up another friend at the airport. By the time we got back (maybe 80 miles), it was cleared up.
 
techron is meant to be used between longer durations... when I worked at the volvo/mercedes dealer back in the 90's (mercedes actually recommended it in the owners manual), we added it as part of a 10k service. if you use it every couple fill ups, it'll do more harm than good, just like seafoam...
 
just put some acetone in the tank!!!
