My Name is Lue, and i'm fom Los Angeles,ca. I am new to this site, and excited to be here. I just recently got a 78 malibu classic with original 305sbc/ th350. When i first got me Bu, she was leaking oil from the Valve covers, leaky fuel pump, and smoking white smoke when i start her up. Sense then, i have replaced the valve cover gaskets, and replaced the old leaky/tired fuel pump. But now, she is having problems turning off. I turn her off, and the engine is still going for a few seconds. How do i fix this? I know that i need to replace my engine, and i'm going to but i'm still putting my penies together. I have found a performance shop that i'm thinking of buying the engine from. Tell me what you guys think?

the problem is called dieseling. it usually comes from the idle being too high or excessive heat in the cylinders that ignites the fuel. first i would check your carb idle speed and tuning. part of the procedure is checking your timing. one thing that concerns me is the white smoke you mentioned. that's usually water in the cylinders from a bad intake or head gasket. this can cause excessive temps.

It only smokes when my Bu is cold. Now for the not turning off part. It just started happening after i changed the fuel pump..

Sounds like your valve seals are shot.
My Cutlass smoked when I fired it up cold.Changed the valve seals and no more white smoke.

ya the smoke on start up is bad valve seals.

as for staying on, dieseling if it started when you got a new fuel pump then you should also do some tuning of the carb, maybe too rich. I had a rich mixture and it happened to me, prob the rich mixture makes it run hot then it diesels.
there should be two screws that are at the bottom of the carb in the front. i always turned them until it ran rough then turned them back 3/4 of a turn.

thanks for the info. I would love to change the valve seals but i need to stop spending a lot of money on an engine that i dont plan to keep. I just need to replace the engine and call it a day. I have 2 more month before i swap it in..

ya true. just live with it and when you get the 350 you'll see the biggest difference.

My car does the same thing when cold aside from the white smoke does it hurt anything or cause any extra wear?
