I broke my 305 down last spring for a cosmetic overhaul. My grandfather was the original owner and it'd never been apart deeper than the valve cover gaskets. He was pretty fanatical about oil changes. Since he bought Delo400 by the drum for his log truck, that's what was used in my Cutlass since day one. I was really impressed with how clean it was inside. Even at 160K it doesn't smoke or burn any oil at all. I'll keep feeding it Delo since that's what it seems to like. Inside:

Yes, diesel oil. I use it in my 350 olds. It's 15w40..made by chevron

what is the compression ratio of your motor

My car reads 95k but there's a chance it's 195k. It had tons of sludge in it, but after new valve seals, it no longer burns any oil. I use Mobil oil and exxon gas in my car. the previous owner never changed the oil, (just kept adding oil, thus the sludge). I just change all the filters, oil and coolant as often as possible. My biggest concern was the oil smoke, but since I've changed the valve seals, oil has been fine and exhaust smoke clear.

Clean, high quality oil/premium filter is key...but another one is to allow the engine to warm up pretty good before driving, especially in the colder months. Older motors with thicker oils need extra warm up time. The worst thing you can do to an older motor is crank it and drive off immediately.....

Or start it and rev it to hell. I have been told that one of the worst thing you can do to an engine is putting too much oil in each oil change. Having too much oil is worse than not having enough oil...to an extent I guess. Also keeping on top of coolant condition and system flushes to avoid overheating and eating up gaskets, especially vehicles with DexCool.

dexcool have some bad additives in it

The additives arent the bad part. People forgetting to use the additives at regular intervals is the bad part.

83 Grand Prix 305 original owner here. 146k. Oil changes with good dino oil and premium oil filters every 4k, greased all the fittings at the same time, and changed the transmission fluid every 35k or every other year. Tuned up about once a year with Ac plugs and new cap and rotor. Other than several alternators and the original water pump at 140k, all original. Just rebuilt the original CCC carb and purrs like a kitten and burns no oil. Treat them right and usually they'll last a long time!
