If it doesn’t sound like 5000rpm then the tach ain’t right. If it actually sounds like 5000rpm, then you have not made it to 3rd gear.

Was my 78 Monte Carlo mom used it for work and drove it in 2nd gear linkage broke thats when the speed limit was 55 mph poor little 229 engine had a meltdown my 80 mc did the same thing both column shifter cars

Also, wouldn't an 87 have OD?

Since my 86' Regal came with a 307/200R4 I would have to think a 87' Cutlass Supreme would come stock with a 200R4.
Maybe the tv cable wasn't adjusted right and he lost 3rd and OD.

Your mechanic may owe you a new transmission. If your car has
P R N (D) D 2 1. it's a 4 speed 2004r.

If it has P R N D 2 1 its a 3 speed Th200c/Th350c.
