That was the technique that I ended up using on the upper ears on the rear end in my Monte. Yes, it does work, but it is labor intensive and can kill drill bits; had one 3/8ths become two.
I did that drill and smash method before. It wasn't long to figure out that was the hard way to do things. From then on, it was...Captain Air Chisel to the rescue!!! Just be careful around the A-arm material and the threads on the crossbar and you can bash those puppies out pronto.
But this C-clamp method would likely work just as well without bashing stuff.
