What is the actual purpose of the hood liner? Mine is in excellent shape but it constantly sheds all over my motor and pisses me off...I am led to believe it is a noise buffer.

protects the paint on the hood from the temperature and i would imagine it would buffer some sound

Is there anything I can do to stop it from shedding all over my engine?

i need to get a new one for mine anyone no of a place that would sell this stuff?

it was just a noise buffer. Most people I know have removed it as it just adds weight and does nothing else

Usually one of the first things I do when I get a car is remove them. I can say they definitely help with the engine noise. If your valve train is noisy, you will hear it a lot more. And yes it does stop the heat from getting to the hood. And I agree that it help save the paint. But most 30 year old cars don't have the best paint anyway lol. Mine was pretty good, but it's starting to crack now since I removed mine. Doesn't really bother me since I'm more of a function over style person, and I'm planning on getting a fiberglass cowl hood eventually anyways.

But here's something I've always wondered. As far as I know the fiberglass hoods don't come with this insulation. How do they hold up to the heat?
