Hood prop rod? Hood spring?

Since you already removed the springs from the hinges...

Open the hood all the way, and clamp the hinges with a vise-grip.
Find a good spot that goes through both pieces of the hinge, and drill a hole all the way through.
Now, you can use small bolts or pins to hold the hinges open...

Your first statement sounds like theres away to trim/adjust the springs for a glass hood. Elaborate please 😀

Thanks Blake I'm gonna look at doing that. Great idea man!

Beermonkey that would be uber cool but I might just go with the self locking ones from Summit, if I do end up using one.

I'M a fan of Blake..............He's a wealth of knowledge!!!

I've done what Blake suggests since I installed a VFN fiberglass hood years ago.

It works really well but just don't forget you have the bolts in the hinges. Did that a couple of times and cracking fiberglass sounds are not good!

Check out http://www.up22.com/accessories.htm

They sell low tension circular style hood springs for the Malibu. I'd imagine they would work on other A/G-body's?

They also sell a lower tension hood pop spring as well as a universal prop rod.

If your thinking about a prop rod you could always look at grabbing one from a Mustang or Chevy S-10/GMC Sonoma. Those are two vehicles off the top of my head that use prop rods. The Mustang may be a better choice as I think it's hood is longer than the small GM truck.

Again, another thought in the back of my mind. If I insert a rod/bolt into a hole in the hinge, there is a lot of tension very close to 2 bolts in the glass hood... might be too much tension.

That page definitely has got good stuff. I will try the low tension coil springs, they will fit right into my hinges, as well as the low tension hood spring -- the other thing I was looking for and have not found till now. And then, if I still need a prop rod, I'll get one.

Thanks all for your help. 😀 8)

Not really. I never had an issue with it seeing that the VFN hood only weight 22lbs.

Now I'm using those hinges on my W25 hood and even though its fiberglass, it weighs more than a stock steel hood. They hold it up okay but being the hood has more weight out over the nose, it puts a lot more stress on the bolts in the hood.
