im 1 of many people that is chasing a posi rear end for my 83 cutlass supreme. is there any way to tell if a car in a junkyard has a posi setup? what cars should i look for? my old 84 firebird TA had a posi locker rear end and it came with a HO 305 and a 700R4 trans.
If u spin the axle & one wheel turns the opposite direction, its not a posi. If both wheels spin the same direction or the wheel on the other side doesn't spin for a few revolutions, its likely a posi. when you find what u think is a posi, pull the cover and check for a posi carrier inside to be certain. Any 78-88 gbody could have a posi, v8 or v6. So you'll have to check them all. I found mine in a gbody El Camino.
Drop the cover, my 86 cutlass had a monte ss posi rear, staion wagon rears are good for gears and posi was always an option with cars so you may get lucky. Although the only posi's you're going to find in a junkyard are crap Gov-locks.
when I was searching for posi they seem to be more common in el caminos. Like stated above you can spin the wheel but you should drop the cover to inspect anyway. Good Luck
the 81 Cutlass i have now beleive it or not is a factory v6 car with a posi, well limited slip with 3.08 gears in a 7.5 axle. its got clutches in there. Found out the lady that bought it ordered it that way because she lived in the mountains, lol. so yea its not uncommon to find a plain jane car with a posi.
