how to recognize a chevy v8 from a olds or buick or Pontiac v8.?? any pictures will be appreciated
 
distributor will be in the back on a chevy, and in the front on BOPC

Pontiac has it on the rear too.

Just google 'small block chevy' and look at the pics that come up. Pay attention to the valve covers and water pump. You should be able to spot a chevy from that. But note, there are two different types of valve covers. Center bolt ones and the old style ones.

SBC - spark plugs below exhaust ports
Pontiac/buick/olds - plugs above exhaust ports
 
I thought Buicks had the distributer in the front...... Chevy engines have 4 bolts holding down the valve cover long and rectagulat. The olds has either 5 or 10 and the the covers go from small to wide from top to bottom. 75 and older have 10 bolts and 76 and newer should have 5 bolts holding the valve cover down.
