Hydro-dipping

A friend of mine started doing it on the side. From what he told me, here's what I know: the surace must be in paintable condition- basically, it's paint floating on water. It's difficult to get right. I can only see this being a bigger problem on a fine pattern like carbon fiber.
In my personal opinion, I've never seen fake carbon fiber that was convincing.
I kind of agree. Getting the pattern straight could be a bit of a daunting task,,,good point.
Maybe going with the real deal might be the way to go....just a little more involved labor wise.

Maybe this process will work for you.
Thank you for that idea and suggestion...I appreciate it. That might be worth looking into. It does look pretty good.

My son and I talked about this on Mothers Day and he said it is the bomb. Prep as usual but it is the real deal
Thanks Greg,
You're actually considering using the Duplicolor stuff? It sounds like your son has had some experience with this product.

He is starting a project now and I will try to keep you up to date on it. He is a researcher so I believe what he is telling me.
Greg,
There's no reason not to believe what he has to report. From some of the mixed reviews I've read on the product, it applies better on flat surfaces, not so great on curved surfaces.

Some people have even said that it's less expensive buying the material, apparently used for shelf liner, and the two colors of paint separately. Not that it's expensive. You still need to purchase adhesion promoter which is included in the kit.

When I built my dash, I went to a sign shop and they printed me some carbon fiber vinyl peal and stick. I put it over 1/4 Foam core.

That looks good, Paul.
I don't know if a sign shop would do a small amount like that. That looks killer, though.
How well does it seem to stick, and was it easy to work with?
So, you made the gauge surround using foam core board?....interesting.

I glued the foam core to a sheet of aluminum. It's the same stuff they wrap cars with. Pretty easy to work with.

Thanks for the suggestion. Another thing to check into. I appreciate it.
