i have a theory that would help fix this country

There is no short term fix for this. What we are seeing is the beginnings of a permanent and fundamental change in the way the economy functions. If you don't like the way that sounds, well... I don't either. However, it is what it is. Where we wind up will all depend on what the leaders decide to do. We will either go back to a more free market oriented system, a Socialist or Marxist system, or in between with a Fascist system. The house of cards has only just begun to fall, and no one knows where the cards will land when it's all done. Sorry, but we couldn't continue living on debt forever. Eventually the bill has to get paid or written off. This is true not only on a personal level, but on a government level as well. How long will it be before the full faith and credit of the US government is worthless? I don't want things to change, I like the way it used to work. I just don't think we have any choice as anything done in the short term will only forestall the inevitable collapse of the world's financial system.

I;m sorry but the free market got us in this pickle. The oil companies knew since 1980 that the demand for oil would outstrip the supply....they just waited for the price to rise so profits would soar, and did they! Consumers returned to big vehicles in the prosperous 90's, buying SUVs from money taken out from their home equity loans. So here we are, the public crying Drill, Baby, Drill. Well guess what? Now pay attention and read this twice. OCCIDENTAL PETROLEUM JUST RELEASED THEIR 2009 CAPITAL EXPENDITURE BUDGET (DRILLING AND EXPLORATION). IT IS DOWN 40% FROM THIS YEAR.
You're not gonna get that rise in oil production you thought you were. You are gonna be screwed again. The people must insist on a comprehensive energy policy that will get us out of the grips of the Middle East so we don't have to send our children to defend a claim to future oil.

so i am no sure why gas is low or if it will stay low or if it will ever go back up?
You need to have a full grasp on the whole situation well before you craft your theories.
dont use it for anything besides buying stuff that is not needed in your life,
So buying these pleasure boats are needed? Aren't they recreational? At least the car is real land transportation that most people need.

Your theory is not taking in the many multiple variables that are happening in the current climates we are facing and in general we need to understand were we have been and learn before we can go forward, hopefully embarking on the proper course.

wow, i think it is time to delete this. you did not read that too well, my point is that if we DO spend money on the things that are NOT needed then it will help the economy, people are loosing their jobs becaause people are not buying anything! i posted this so i could show what small things do to help us out and it has turned into a fight over who is to blame and arguing!

one of the biggest problem we have is people living off credit and buying things they cant afford, my "pleasure boat" is paid off in full and i would have never bought it if i could not afford it. maybe i am dumb but please explain to me how owning a "pleasure boat" is any different then owning a project car or if you are going to call out things not needed then do you own more then 1 tv? do you have expanded cable? a computer? do you really need any of this to survive? do you see my point, all of that nice stuff that people have creates jobs and more jobs equal better economy right?? the boating thing was just a example!

The problem is that no one can get credit to buy anything anymore. Even of you have a 720 beacon score there is a good chance no one will lend to you, even to buy a new car. Remember that we have an economy that was based on consumption and easy to get credit. It's not just GM/Ford/Chrysler who can't sell cars either. No one can sell cars, Toyotas are piling up and Toyota has had to close some factories too due to a 35% drop in sales of it's vehicles as compared to this time last year. Credit card companies have reduced the credit limits of good customers with excellent credit. This was why we were told that the bad mortgage paper needed to be bought out with the $700 billion, to restore liquidity. This is what has collapsed and why we are in this mess. Europe is just as bad as we are for the same reasons. It was not just the US that got mired in the subprime mess, European banks were guilty of similar lending practices in their home markets too. Iceland is one of the hardest hit and experienced an almost total bank failure. People want to spend money, but they are scared to do so, and unable to get credit if they are willing to risk it.

BTW, I am not faulting you for owning toys. This is America and we all like our goodies. It's just that the problem was different than what you stated.

yea, i cant blame anyone for having anything nice if they can afford it. its the people who took on more then they could safely afford and the banks that helped tehm do it that are at fault here. i dont beleive in buying brand new stuff and its not because i cant afford i, it just doesnt make sense to me, i drive off teh lot and its worth thousands less then it was before i drove it away??? i dont understand big houses at all, more payment, more taxes, more utilities, more maintenace, more cleaning, higher insurance..... i have freinds that are couples with no kids that have 2300 square feet main level houses and they can barely afford them but they have a big flashy show off house. same people have brand new cars also....

Our consumerism mentality sometimes reminds me of Aldous Huxley's novel "A Brave New World", in which people are psychologically conditioned into consumerism from birth, and are supplied with drugs to keep them happy. It is seen as good to be wasteful as that keeps the economy going.

As for me, I want a new car. I like new cars and have owned two. However, I know that with the economy being what it is I should not increase my monthly expenses with a bill that I must pay in order to keep mobile. I have no problem with people owning nice houses or cars, I just don't understand living beyond your means. It's too stressful.
