Ok heres my problem
For some reason GM decided to make a beautiful car and put a 3.8L V6 in it which has no balls
Im only 18 i don't have a whole lot of money.

So here is how you may be able to help
Im looking for ways to "beef" up my engine without acutally swapping to a V8 (Ill save the V8 swap for when i actually have money) sodoes anyone have simple solutions to give my car some power. I have some knowledge of working on cars, intalling parts, and what not. Just don't know what to start out with.

i have a 1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
its bone stock
except for the rally rims and bf goodrich tires

I love my car
I just want it to have some balls on the road
So when dumb people in ricer bolt on peices of sh*t pull up next to me wanting to race i wont have to race them just the thought of knowing i can will be good enough for me.

This is the hard part about having the v6. Edelbrock does make v6 intakes, camshafts, and I'm sure someone is making headers out there, but the chances of them being for g bodies is slim. Trying to get more balls out of a v6 is just not financial logically in any way. The power coming out of those engines, let alone my OE 305 in my 80 malibu which only made like 160hp, is so low and they don't make any torque either. In all reality, the ricers we all hate are probably making just as much power as you if not more.

The only way I can possibly think of that would help you feel the power better at the rear wheels is a gear swap. I'm sure your running a numerically high gear right now since it is stock. I'm guessing you have a 3 speed trans in that car, my best advice is go with a set of 3.42 gears. If you can find a 7.5 posi chuck, thats even better. This won't be a waste of money because it will be a good investment for when you put in a v8 later.

I'm 19 and spent 5 years building up my stocker malibu to what it is now. It takes time and patience.

Well thanks for the reply
Although im not very engine savy so i dont know what any of what you mentioned is but i do have a brother who just graduated from NADC so he knows a little more than me
but if what your saying is true i have a guy with a chevy 350 for only $200 bucks im gonna go look at it tomorrow and take my brother cause it sounds too good to be true but its worth a shot

shitty part is i only paid $900 bucks for the car
which i thought was a damn good deal cause theres not a thing wrong with it
it is my first car
and i plan on putting way more than what i paid for it into it lol

Why not just use this car as an educational tool? Learn how to tune it, service it, and enjoy it. Not many guys get a clean original G-body as a starter car. One day you will look back at it and get all nostalgic. If you really want V-8 power then you need to save up your pennies and stockpile all the parts you will need for the total changeover. Do your research on this site and others to know just what is involved and how much things are going to cost. You will quickly see how expensive and time consuming it will be, not to mention how long your car will be sidelined while you go about the "improvements".There's nothing worse than a motor swap gone bad tying up your Dad's driveway! Might even be better to just start saving for a V-8 car and use your V-6 for daily transportation, at which it probably shines.

Yeah lets not get into costs right now lol I traded a broken dirtbike for my malibu. I probably have over 8-10k tied in my malibu and am doing a 700r4 swap cause my stock driveshaft, the ONLY stock piece on the whole car, snapped in half. Then I try to start it a couple days later and find that when the driveshaft snapped on the highway, it cracked my bellhousing in two and put 3 good holes in my floor.

If your going to look at a 350, do keep in mind that it is going to need a rebuild. Don't dare putting in a used motor into your car, cause Murphy's law says your new engine has a problem.

When I say gear swap, I'm referring to the gears located in the rear end that you mount your two rear tires to. Or you can just keep it a nice daily driver like bonnewagon mentioned and just save your duckies.

I put the Edelbrock top end on a brand new GM 3.8L crate engine, cam kit/4-barrell intake/carb. It was still horribly slow. I would suggest to keep the V6 orignal and get it tuned in really good. Just drive it until you can buy a V8 car or like "pat" said stock pile the parts for a swap.

yea i know i should save my "duckies" but..........
i have no bills and nothing better to spend my money on
so............
the 3.42 ratio sounds like a pretty good idea
does anyone know where i could get ahold of that sort of set up?
possibly go with a new carb to

i have no idea if this is a dumb question or not but you guys sound alot more educated than me lol so here it is
if i bought a quadjet carb with the quad manifold would it work on my v6
and do they even make one that would fit it

gah i feel like a jackass
but gotta learn somehow
thanks for the info guys i really appreciate it i just really want to know more about me car and what im working with and all that so this is a really big help
