idk man, someitmes simple is best. I have a stock (stock from a 91 cutlass that is) am/fm tape deck, amazon.com pioneer 3.5" and 4x10s and I am going to put a 10" sub in the back with an amplifier, don't know what kind yet. Not the best system around, not the most flashy or expensive, but no thief would look twice at it nowadays. And those stock GM units can pack a punch.
I would have to agree and definitely say simple is better. My current set up is all clarion speakers. They were pretty cheap, entry level that sound decent for the money. I also have an old school Jensen 100x4 rms 4 channel my dad gave me. All hooked to a pioneer single din with bluetooth, iPod interface, hands free calling etc. I'm pretty happy with it. originally I had two 3.5" speakers in the dashboard, and 6x9's in the back with the adaptors. Also a single 12" sub in a ported box, nothing fancy. Then I ended up making these speaker pods. This puts an extra tweeter and 6.5" woofer in the door. BIG difference in sound quality. I have the 3.5" running off the radio power, and the 6x9's and components running off the amp power. I have removed the subwoofer and have actually been a lot happier with the way it sounds. It does not have super loud, killer bass, but it gets the job done. It is very dynamic and will play just about any type of music without distortion. It will also get plenty loud to hear over the exhaust going down the highway with the windows down. I have already made another set of speaker pods to install a 5.25" component set in the rear passenger armrests under the quarter windows. that should clean up the sound even more.
Hey Brian, glad to see you are back on the forum. I don't have any suggestions for your sound system as I don't really mind my stock stereo, but glad to see you are still around and still have the car.
Thanks for all of the replies, guys. Sorry for the lack of updates, but I went through Crutchfield (<-- very pleased with it) and got a refurb'd Kenwood head unit, Infinity Kappa 6x9s, and some Infinity 3.5"s. I'm very happy with it, let alone having a decent stereo for the first time ever. Just need to eliminate exhaust drone now. I'm in the process of cutting some slots to make the 6x9s fit on the rear deck and the dash filler panel thingy did not survive the swap. The plastic is in terrible shape and most of the grey came off during clean-up. I'm going to attempt to repair it and paint it flat black for the time being.
