Increased G body value when turning antique????

Agreed- except for the GN, 442, GNX, Etc, I don't see these as being huge money makers. I found a factory 4 speed 78 Monte where they only made 1,700 of these and don't feel that by itself was going to be anything huge in the future with a 305, weak transmission and 7.5 axle.
SO- I'm building an "example" of what's possible with these beautiful body shapes, new suspension and drivetrains, to my liking. I'll have a car that will handle akin to a 2000 'Vette, go like hell, be fun and different- with plenty of space for kids, clubs, luggage and be loud with the cutouts when needed, lol..
The quality of the build along with components come sale time will take care of itself if need be. The fact that it was originally a 4 speed only makes it a bit more interesting I think.
 
I honestly think they'll wind up being the next gen of "tri-five" Chevies. A bazillion made, a whole lot cut up in the name of racing because people think they'll never run out, then the survivors will be customized beyond belief, with only a few examples of truly stock left.... its already happening.
 
We raced metrics (g bodies) but like any race team we were cheap. We would only buy a metric that was not roadworthy and ready for the recycling yard. We would strip the wiring but kept the harnesses intact. We would remove body panels and all all the glass, window regulators, headlight pods and tail lights, trim, bumpers and fillers...etc. We would then advertise the parts for dirt cheap to put the money into beer and wings. Very few people would show up to buy a few pieces after haggling over the price for 20 minutes so we ended up junking it all. Racers don't buy a car that is roadworthy, they cost too much. And the racers who do have money still don't buy a roadworthy car, they build one.
 
All I know is that My Cutlass isn't stock and if someone is interested in buying it after the frame swap I'm going to be asking for a pretty penny. Why? well how about you go and look for a g body with a crispy clean frame and body mounts...

Not that I would ever sell it. 😉
 
The GS is rare enough of an example to be worth a good bit. Was it a 4 speed numbers matching car ?
 
IMO G bodies aren't real collectors cars and they are terrible investments from a monetary standpoint. If you want a collector car get a tri-five, or an A Body. G bodies are kind of a gray area when it comes to values; it seems like every one is different than the next and they are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them. Old doesn't neccesarily mean valuable. Once I get a motor back into my regal, I guess it may be worth in the $5-6k range. Just a guess. I've got a lot more into it than that. G bodies aren't a car you should own for their value, own them because they are cheap and easy to make fast.

Here is some perspective. The Pontiac Fiero, which was probably one of the worst cars GM ever built (though I thought the 2nd gen 1987+ Pininfarina body was quite good looking) has had the value shoot up over 100% during the past few years. I get that the Fiero's production numbers were a fraction of how many G bodies were produced.. BUT.. G bodies, typically didn't:

Spontaneously combust
Vomit coolant like a drunken sailor in Shanghai on his first shore leave
Fail incessantly in every possible way
Suffer from being overweight and grossly underpowered (Chevette Engine and front suspension)
Suffer from being basically made from a spare parts bin

Unless there is some sort of perverse and sick correlation between celebrating one of GM's biggest and dismal failures equating to sky rocketing prices these days, I am left scratching my head.

Fiero's do have die hard fans, as do G bodies and I will tell you very few saw the sky rocketing values of the Pontiac Fiero coming.

Moral of the story.

There may be hope for our G bodies yet!

So With that said my Gbody is worth way more than a lowly Fiero ever will be.
The fact that the radiator was in the front and the engine behind the seats tells a hell of story
about GM's design men during that era. Sadly the Gbody was Killed for a front wheel drive
version . V8 rear wheel drive cars rule , Own a classic....
