I found a 8.5 from a 70 chevelle on craigslist for $200 only 16 miles away from me.
I need to know what it takes to install this rear end i have heard it done before..
I have a 67 8.2 and JBrue has the 68-72 12 bolt chevelle rear end. The 68-72 is 2 inches wider than the 64-67 and 4.5 inches wider than the G body rear. JBrue suggested I used the UMI conversion uppers which I did and they fit perfect plus with the Roto joint there is no more binding JBrue never mentioned it so I guess the lowers fit the wider rear better then the rear I have. I'm going to get the UMI lowers with the Roto joints that will accommodative the difference. You might want to ask JBrue about sugestions wheel back spacing for that rear.
if anything, more options for wheels will open up for you... Not many wheels out there these days with less than 4.5" backspacing. And our cars have trouble with even that.
the 8.5 will be many times stronger, hold up to more power, and last alot longer. The wider rear will give you a better stance as well.
and at $200 (assuming it's in working condition), plus a couple hundred for control arms, you're looking at a very good upgrade.
this is what my car looks like with the 67 rear, 16 x 8 wheels with a 4.5" BS and 245-5016 tires. The 70 rear is 1" wider per side and I could fit the wider rear with rolling the fenders with the 4.5 BS
the 8.2 is good up to 500 hp which is more than my engine puts out but less than JBrue's engine. I paid 600 for mine that came with an Eaton posi and 3.08 gears
Can anyone confirm with this pic below, on whether it is a chevy or bop 8.2 10 bolt rear? i have read that the chevy version has more plentiful aftermarket availability for parts. I am looking to do the same swap as Pontiacgcp and others have and i know i need the uppers at least. I have found a deal on one for less than 150 bucks! 😛 But it is a one wheel peel
