with that cover it's a 7.5 rear end

thanks for the help Pontiacgp, but i found out what i was looking for. This is in fact a BOP 8.2 10 bolt. Aftermarket parts dont seem to be too plentiful for them, so that must have been why it was such a good deal. Here is a link... :blam:

your right, that cover looks to be the same for the 7.5

what did you end up finding?

Thanks JBreu, I ultimately want to find a 12 bolt. I like the setup that you have. Its definitely the way to go. But, the 8.2, I think is not such a bad alternative, and now i know what im looking for.

Pontiacgp, I actually found the INFO that i was looking for. But I still am in search of the rear end that will fit my needs. I was looking for an axle that was 1)"wider" than the stock 7.5 and 2) stronger for future power upgrades and 3)better handling. I plan on going with a concave style wheel and the wider axle will be great for what i am aiming for. I believe the 68-72 (10 & 12 bolt rears) are about 4 inches wider. I know some folks dont care for the extra offset that comes with the axle, but i think its the way to go, considering the direction that modern wheel fitment has gone. I just dont see the point in getting a beefier rear end and cant get wheels that i think will set the theme for my Monte, so I will continue searching for an 8.2 or get my money (1k-1200 bucks) up for the big 12 bolt, one day.

Cut123, I will take a look to see what you have, bro thanks.

Oh by the way, i also found a great article on gm rear ends.

One way to tell the Chevy from the Olds rear is in the cover; the Olds will have those concave shaoes on either side of the cover whereas the Chevy will not have them. Not sure if the A-bodies had it but the B-body Chevrolets also had a formed area in the cover that helped supply gear oil to either side of the rear-end, sort of like a really wide upside-down /\, but at a wider angle.

Good luck in your search
