Insurance - What are you paying?

I only have the required liability on my Regal.

Technically, the insurance company pays me $15 to insure it - the amount that it costs to insure is less than the discount I got for adding a second car! 😀

My insurance actually came down from $250 a month when I did not carry the delivery rider on it. I am through Progressive Commercial, and carry extra insurance on myself and liabilities due to my accident a few years ago, and that I own a house. As for what I make, well, let's just say I picked my delivery area carefully when I decided not to be a store manager anymore, and I make about the same a week as I did back then most of the times, if not a bit more. Plus, I work 20-25 hours a week less and commute 18 less miles one way. Plus, I have not had a car payment in 6 years, and have used the same truck for delivery for most of the last 10 years. I do spend $10-20 a day in gas, and get $12-23 a day from the company as a vehicle allowance, dependent on the number of deliveries taken. My truck is not too bad on gas, and gets 21mpg with me beating the snot out of it. I would prefer a 5 speed 91-99 Sentra with a GA16DE engine in it, as they get over 30mpg delivering from my personal experience ( I have owned 2 of them).

When I hit 25, I got classic car insurance through Pilot for about $200. They aren't as pickey as Silver wheels on what you can and can't do - all they require is an appriasal every 3 years in order to set the amount your car is insured for, and that you have another vehicle as a daily driver. The regular appraisal is a huge advantage, as a standard insurance policy will scrap a g-body for a simple fender bender as book values aren't great. I re-appraised early last year because I had a few things done to the car, and g-bodies are only climbing in value so it's best to keep up with it. The first appraisal was low IMO (guy wasn't here 5min), but the second one I had done was up $4500 from the first (this guy spent an hour), and more where I expected it to be.

Before I hit 25, I paid ~$150/mo IIRC. I dropped it to fire and theft when in storage for the winters which was only ~$15/mo IIRC.

It's a shame how all young guys get painted with the same brush, and I consider it discrimination. If they had stats showing people of a certain race got in more accidents, do you think they would get away with charging them more? I think not. From my observations, young females are worse drivers with their phones and makeup etc. The way it should be is everyone starts on the same clean slate - if you screw up as a young driver, THEN you should get nailed to the wall. You shouldn't be punished for something you've never done, which is exactly what they do.

What about elderly people being the worst drivers. I think most of them could probably get an OMVI if they were tested for the medication they were on. I do alot of driving and I notice that there is alot of different age groups doing stupid crap.

Oh yes, a good amount of elderly drivers are downright dangerous. I know it would really suck to lose your license after X years of driving, but there are a LOT of older people who should not be on the road.

A couple months back, a guy in probably his late 70's backed into my fiancees PARKED car. The biggest problem elderly people seem to have is the lack of mobility to turn their head. They only look at their mirrors while backing up and just go slow and hope for the best.

I wish people who get speeding tickets didnt have to have there rates raised up. I have alot of speeding tickets, and have never been in an accident that was my fault. I dont think speeding makes everybody a dangerous driver. I think I am alot more alert when speeding to watch out for other stupid drivers that want to cut me off, and of course cops!

The big problem that makes people a dangerous driver is that they do not know what is going on around them.

Sorry, but I can't say I agree with that. Most people go over the limit to a certain degree (10 over or so), and usually cops will leave you alone in that range. When you start going a fair amount over the limit, you will get caught now and then, and you should "pay" for it. I'm not saying you are one of those guys that blows by people on the highway like they are standing still, but if you don't want raised limits for speeding, where do you draw the line. For example - some kid got busted doing 2.5X the posted 100km/h limit here last weekend. That kid should have his license taken away for a LONG time, and when he can drive again his insurance should be $10K/year IMHO. No excuse for that. It's people like him that make other young guys have to pay high rates - what should happen is he (and others like him) should be nailed to the wall as far as rates go when/if he ever drives again.

Raised rates for speeding makes sense to me - it is directly related to the risk of an accident regardless of how alert you may be. The faster you are going, the less time you have to react to unexpected situations.

Ok 85 ss, I do see your point. Most of my speeding tickets are around 80 mph in a 60-65 mph zone. I really dont see that as being a very high rate of speed, but it is still 15-20 mph above the speed limit and can be still going alot faster than traffic. I think that is why I have never tryed to talk an officer out of giving me a ticket. I do understand how that can be dangerous. Then there are those people that do 90+mph that weave in and out of heavy traffic, also barely missing cars. I really do think those people should lose there liscence, actually I think it would be cosidered wreckless operation.

I tend to be more of the type of person that if traffic is med. to heavy, I try to just go with the flow of traffic. When traffic is really light I tend to speed a little sometimes, depending on how I feel. On regular city streets, I just go 5 mph over. Maybe I would be better off moving somewhere that has 75-80 mph speed limits, and I just wont have to deal with tickets and higher insurance.
