Someone said that, in their state/province, insurance is like legalized extortion. I feel the same way about New Jersey. Our rates are mind-boggling.
That said... my insurance adventure has been... troublesome. About ten years ago, I got my license suspended for a month thanks to my being young, stupid, and my driving a 1977
Caprice Classic over the Tappan Zee Bridge at 163mph (!!!). Ahem. I got my license back and, shortly thereafter, was dropped by my insurance company for a completely unrelated reason (they were holding a "lottery", and I "won", so to speak).
Due to my recent speed mishap, the rates I was being quoted were preposterous and I actually spent nearly a year car-less. It was brutal, it sucked and, damnit, I deserved every second of it.
Eventually I found a very nice, local State Farm representative -- a girl who I think kind of liked me -- and she cut me all kinds of breaks in getting my insurance back in action. These days, I pay about $105 per month to keep my Grand Prix on the road. And at the end of every year, I usually get a $250-$300 check back from the insurance company. So I think it's actually not too bad.
Strangely... I pay more to insure my 1990 pig-of-a-V6 Cougar than I do for my V8 Grand Prix. Neither of them have historic plates. I've yet to figure out why, but... whatever.
