163mph in a 1977 Caprice has to be some kind of record!!! How many turbos and how much nitrous did it take to propel that brick to that speed? I mean, you could have contested it by telling the judge "Your honor, I was driving a 1977 Caprice Classic. Do you really believe I could do 163mph in that car?"

A record? I doubt it... I've seen '96 Impala SS's break 150 (there's a great video on YouTube of a police chase, and that Impala completely blows away the police cruisers), and those things are actually a bit heavier than the older boxy Caprices. Honestly, I was a kid and didn't know half the stuff that'd been put into my car... but it had been a project for at least three people before I got it and further mucked about with it.

I actually did try to debate it, though... I mean... I loved that car. She was a monster... a previously police-used Caprice with a 350, five-speed overdrive transmission... the car looked like hell, but it moved. But I seriously didn't think I maintained 163 the entire time. Sure, I had a great tail-wind and all, but c'mon. They say, though, that's the top speed that I touched, however briefly.

I argued a bit, but then... I was kind of proud of it, so I probably didn't argue as well as I should have. But... eh, I paid for it in the end.

Someone said that, in their state/province, insurance is like legalized extortion. I feel the same way about New Jersey. Our rates are mind-boggling.

Exactly. My insurance want's ~$700 a year for "pleasure insurance" on my cutlass. No collision, that's basic liability insurance minus $75 cause it isn't a daily driver. Meanwhile, my dad's 76 t/a gets $300 a year through hagerty with full ($15k+?) insurance on it. But I have a 2 problems, I don't have a garage and I'm under 25 and want to drive my car (even though it's in my dad's name otherwise my rates would be closer to $1200 a year for base LIABILITY!!)

I don't know what was done to it, but it must have been quite a lot because it sure isn't aerodynamic by any means. The 96 was far better at cutting the wind than a 77. BTW, I am not trying to cut down you or your car, I just find it funny that one of those cars could go that fast. Especially considering how slow they were from the factory.
