I wonder what the exact weight savings is, when you switch an Olds 455 to aluminum heads and intake :?:

Aluminum intake weighs in around 30-35lbs compared to the 60lbs or so for the stock cast iron intake.

Aluminum heads weigh right around 30lbs each bare compared to a stock cast iron head which is right at 60lbs bare.

So if an all cast iron intake/head setup weighs around 180lbs then the aluminum pieces bring it down to just 90lbs total. Not including valves, rocker arms, springs, etc.

So if take the total assembled weight of a 455 which is around 640lbs, you could get it down to 550lbs.

I know a lot of guys put a small block olds in their car over a 455 because of the "weight" but really, with an Olds, the big block isn't that much heavier than a small block and once you throw aluminum parts at it, your back down into small block territory.

As far as gaskets, I also prefer to the composite gaskets over the metal "turkey" tray setup. If you still have your old turkey tray gasket, you can still use it as a splash shield if your concerend about the oil. Take a pair of tin snips and cut off the entire sealing surface around the intake ports and then install it like you would normally. It will hold itself in place and then you can install the composite intake gaskets to seal the intake.

If you want to be fancy you can buy a splash shield from someone like Mondello. It's about the only thing I would buy risk buying from them.

Or you can just run without any shield. I did it years ago and had no ill effects.
