I have a 84 El Camino, which needs a new intermediate steering shaft. I purchased a 93-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee shaft as I read in many other articles that this is a bolt-in replacement. It won't fit my steering column shaft. The Jeep shaft is about a 1/4" smaller at the top that the present steering column shaft. The Jeep shaft has a 96 date on it so I think it is the correct year. Did I get the wrong shaft or is the El Camino shaft larger that other car shafts as it is based on the station wagon chassis?

I also previously bought a G-body shaft at a salvage yard (was not in the car) and it is 1" too short. So I bought the Jeep shaft hoping to solve the sloppy steering problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the shaft you need is from the regular Jeep Cherokee, not the Grand Cherokee.

I believe the chrysler Part number for the NOS shaft is 52079050. OEM aftermarket part number is 4713943.

Most 89-94 Jeep Cherokees should work--however there are always a few exceptions.

There is a great post on turbobuick.com about this.

also, if the g-body shaft you bought was one inch too short is might have been collapsed as these are collapsable in case of an accident. If they are used, sometimes they get stuck and need a little forcing to expand again.

The Jeep shaft needs to be from a Cherokee, not a Grand Cherokee. Also it needs to have steel ends with NACAM stamped on them, not the aluminum ends. These will also collapse and pull out to fit, but may take a little work or some heat.
