Bought my 84 GP, the guy swore it was a 350, he said his buddy ran the i.d number off the front of the block.... I had a brain fart cause the numbers are on the back of the block, not the front, I must hve been mildly retarded that day.. So I ran the numbers yesterday and just as I suspected, its a 305 1986-92, and from the looks of it ( its a greasy pig) I'd guess its still stock. The question I have for you guys, is do you feel its worth the time and money to rebuild the 305 or would it be just as cost effective to snag a 350 block and build that. I'm not looking for the motor to be really nasty, I'm really going for a weekend family cruiser that I can show and still have a little sack to run down some ricers. shoot me your thoughts. thanks

I've seen a couple 305 that didn't go bad, but you'll get alot more out of a 350 with the same amount of $$ put in it. My GP had a 305 in it, I think it was an 84 as well. Now the guy I sold it to has a pretty mean 400 chevy in it. You can get a 350 pretty cheap these days.

i had a friend build a 305 for an 82 malibu with edelbrock intake headers and a comp cams XE262. he had a saginaw close ratio 4 speed and 3.73. he engine dyno'd it at school and had 260 hp. not a whole lot, maybe it was the saginaw and the gears, but that thing hauled.

This depends on what you want out of the car. If you want a nice stock/show car, you could simply rebuild the stock motor and work on suspension upgrades/gearing (maybe a new overdrive would be nice too). This should set you ahead of most ricers.

The 305 can be built, but youre limited to the heads. You can spend big bucks on new aluminum ones or port the original ones and still have the same performance as SBC aftermarket heads for half the price. Yes, any engine can be built. Problem is -- to do it you need a nasty gear set up, a lot of cash, and deftness to save $$.

Popular hotrodding built one with 3smething horsepower, but remember torque wins races and hp sells motors. Lunati also built one with 343 but it was on pump gas. I would use the two build and go somewhere in between. Heck you should slap a supercharger on that bad boy.

These would be nice if they were olds motors. Simple fact is you can't build a high hp olds 305 like these on any sort of reasonable budget. SBC 305 is a different animal.

Edit:
I was thinking 307 for some reason. You're correct.

I remember coming across a link where they built a 307 or 350 olds motor that made 400hp. I think it would be good to build a 305 if you already have it or can basically get it for free.

thanks for the feedback, the reason I posted this topic is because I've heard of a lot of 305 blowing chunks. When I bought the car I had heard it run and it ran strong. now... it will barely turn over. Ive tried to retard the timing, not it..I thought maybe it was hydrolic lockup.. also not it. replaced the battery cables (new battery). still stumped

Don't waste the money rebuilding the 305. The 350 is the way to go; you'll get so much more HP and TQ with the 350. Plus you'll always be able to hot rod it more in the future. Doesn't take much to max-out the 305 capabilities.

the thing here is, to get started get a cam, intake and headers on that 305. again i am going off of my friends old 305 here. then gears in the back. then anytime you want to upgrade to a 350, or when funds are more readily available, you have a good gear setup along with a cam and intake for your 350 and you can drop it right into the headers you have installed.
