The title pretty much says it all. I have a 168 tooth flexplate on my 383. Will the stock starter off my 305 work on my 383 with 168 tooth flexplate.

i think so. i just can't remember if the 305 was a 168 tooth. but a 168 starter will fit any 168 flexplate.

If the starter mounting bolt holes are straight across, the starter is for a 153 tooth flywheel/flexplate. If the starter mounting bolt holes are staggered, the starter is for a 168 tooth flywheel/flexplate.

Oldtinsmith is correct, the difference is in the mounting hole locations.

The easy way to tell is that the 153 tooth flexplate is considerably smaller . So if both flexplates are the same size starter will work. Also if you look at the snout of the starter where the gear is the 168 tooth starter is only slightly angled wheren the 153 is angled alot.

Well if the teeth are close to the bell housing then it a 168 . In other word if there is about a 1/4 to a 1/2 between teeth and inside of bellhousing you got a 168. the 153 comes nowhere close to bell housing.

I'm gonna say stock is for 153.... Reason I say this is that when I bought my Monte it had the stock 305, tired at that with 200k, and when I put my 350 ( bored/stroked to 388) the stroker kit came with the 168 tooth flywheel and the stock starter didn't work. What I did was buy a mid 80's 454 big block starter, lighter and smaller, and she went right in!! 8)

the starter from the 305 has the staggerd bolt pattern, and it will turn the flexplate, but it grinds. i havent tried the straight bolt pattern starter. Im thinking about just spending the money and buy a mini starter that will work with both flexplates
