After living in barracks there is no way I would live in a place where they can tell you your mailbox is the wrong color so get rid of it. I busted my azz to buy a single family house where I can do what I want when I want. Even here in Shitty City a house with a garage and a back yard is still attainable if you work for it. My flag flies proudly and anyone who tries to prevent that is stepping into dangerous territory.
Sad our society has divulged into that aspect of judgement. i couldn't wrap my head around why someone woud question WHY i was flying the flag.for him to imply i was doing based on political standings was just.,.
Have to say, this was the worst turnout for the parade that Ive ever seen. Between the two towns involved theres a little over 12K people. The population has more than tripled over the past 20 years. The VFW always leads off. This year there might have been a dozen guys. Three were pretty young guys in MARPAT so they might not have been members. Just came to march. Only one school band. A small group of scouts and three fire departments. The streets were empty.
When I got home I went on the two FB community pages and said my peace. I was surprised to see the amount of comments within 15-20 minutes. A decent amount of them were from people like me. Long time residents that went to the parade and felt the same way I did. One woman suggested a banner to tell people the day of the parade. Seriously ? Its on the same f'n day every year. Can people really be that stupid ?
Im going to make a suggestion to the organizers for next year. I know theres a ton of vets in the two towns. Young and old. instead of just having the VFW lead the parade, put out an open invitation to ALL men and women that served our country. Let them all march. Show theyre appreciated and respected.
If something doesnt change Im thinking this parade will eventually be stopped due to lack of interest. Very sad.

I don't know about your area, but here the VFW is DOA. They caused this themselves buy ostracizing anyone who was not a WW2 vet. Then they grudgingly accepted Korean vets, and lastly Vietnam vets though those were definatly the red-headed step-children. I guess one day they looked around and saw there were only three guys left in the post so they officially opened up to "cold war" vets. Too late. Gulf war, OIF, etc, need not apply. So the new vets are invisible. Very sad.
Pretty sure all the WWll vets are long gone. Even some of the early Vietnam guys. I know they have a few from the Gulf War.
