hey great progress! that has to be rewarding to be off the jack stands and on the ground. keep us updated!

I started blocking the hood and roof yesterday, and am about to go finish the All Metal work and prime it again today.

The same one it is now: 2002 GM Navy Blue Metallic poly. It's the dark blue that was used on the F bodies that has a purple sheen to it in sunlight. It will also keep the wide rocker trims and most of it's original chrome too. I want to eventually use a set of 17x8 and 17x9.5 Torq Thrust II's on it as well as having the tailpipes done in polished stainless steel like a 5.0 Mustang LX. I am not putting any of the emblems back on except for the Oldsmobile script on the front bumper and the hood ornament. It also will not have the ugly ding strips, and I eliminated the vinyl top too. Oh, and the back windows are going to be tinted 5% and the doors in 20%.

Well, the car has been apart since long before I had internet access or a digital camera, so I have no pics of it that I can post easily. Plus, when I got it, it was a typical silver 1985 Cutlass Supreme Brougham with a dark blue landau top, dark blue interior, and 14 in whitewalls with wire hubcaps. It came with that mountain of power that is the 3.8 liter 2bbl V6, and had the cool 2.41 axle and TH200C. It was in good shape because it was only 8 years old and had 61k miles on it. My grandfather had bought it for me so that I would have transportation to college. It has been through may iterations, so it's difficult to say which pic is the true starting point.

As for the aluminum hood, it is a factory part I found on a Diesel car, but they are extraordinarily rare. I have maybe found 3 in the last 10 years, and only one of them was good enough to use. You just have to get lucky and go to the U pull it yards often enough to stand a chance. Even rarer is the aluminum core support, which I have never been able to find. I do find the aluminum bumpers from time to time, but have yet to pull one since it has not been in the budget when I have found them.

Today's update: Removed all of the caulk from the driprails and filled them with JB Weld. It probably won't crack in a year like the caulk does. I also ground the filler off a weld where the filler had cracked and epoxied it too using the same stuff. I didn't want to risk burning through the metal with more welding, or warping the roof skin with heat.

Do aluminum hoods come on all Cutlass diesels? I saw a diesel Cutlass in a junkyard by me, dont remember if it is usable though. Im plannin on grabin that diesel also, very strong blocks to work with.

I have read in a few places that they did, but in my experience, no. I have seen diesels with steel hoods too. They look identical to the steel hoods, but you can tell because they feel different when you lift and lower them. Interestingly, mine has a yellow "D" chalk mark on the underside, by the safety latch. Weather this means Diesel or not, I do not know. If you do find one though, be sure to grab the hood hinge springs too as they are lower tension than the steel ones.
