I bought my youngest grandson a 16" bike and he doesn't need the training wheels so I tried to find a kick stand. The only one in stock in town is a bit too long so I cut an inch out of the aluminum shaft and tried to bond the end where they have the lock bolt and the shaft back together using J-B Weld. The J-B didn't work and would not bond to the aluminum which surprised me. The J-B says it does metal and I've used it before with good results. I switched a 2 part epoxy which seems to be working. Anyone have any issues with J-B and aluminum?

JB Weld sucks, that's why it is so cheap to buy. For metal try Marine Tex found at marine stores or online, not cheap but awesome stuff. What locking thing? Every kickstand I've seen you just cut the end off to fit what you need. Check out Nashbar.com for this $6.95 one :

I have used the marine tee also.

Mark is absolutely right, JB Weld is sh*t. A friend of mine had a marine hardware store years ago. I remember him having a display of Marine Tex products, and sold the stuff, too.. That stuff really works. It is more costly than JB, but again, the stuff really works.

well the epoxy didn't work so I tried the j-b again and it seems to have done the job. I do appreciate all the suggestions and I will get some Marine Tee or the Por 15 Patch to put on the shelf for next time if it is available up here,

Mark, the only kick stand I could find was one like this. I wish I could have found one like the one you posted.

Thanks man. I forgot that POR15 had their own two part epoxy.
I remember the Marine Tex display showed being able to drill and tap it, and other bonding tasks.

Steve I still don't follow. What did you cut?

The part with the locking bolt is bonded to the aluminum shaft so I cut out an inch of the shaft above the locking bolt housing and bonded the shaft back together. I made a detailed drawing with my cad program to make it easier for you to understand....haha

Now I get it. You needed it really short and wanted to keep the rubber tip. I might have cut the whole thing just above the clamp and stuck a rubber cane tip on the end.
