I don't think thermostats come any higher than the 195º. Online i have been reading running cold in the winter isn't an uncommon problem. My 99 jeep, same engine,has some good heat and I think it has an electric fan
 
My daughter's '00 Jeep Cherokee ran nuclear hot all summer. Now that it's cold out- it still ran hot. It just took longer to get there,and this was with a 160º stat, ran 210º or more no matter what. So she said it was taking too long to warm the car lately so I put in a 195º just for the winter. So now it gets hot quick, and sits at 195º all day. :wtf: I did notice that when I first got it I had to reverse flush the heater core and hoses- they were pretty full of crud. Heater output temp went from like 90º to 150º after that. Don't forget too that the Cherokees have a lot of space to heat and loads of glass surface letting the cold in.
 
It does have alot of space to heat up but I let it run for 20 minutes and could stick my finger in the coolant in the rad without burning it. I'm going to remove the mechanical fan and replace it with an electric. Mark, was your daughters a mechanical fan or electric. My 99 Cherokee didn't run hot when the weather heated up and gave me great heat in the winter. I'm thinking I'll also replace the plugs with some hotter ones to heat up the engine a bit more...
 
My old 97 XJ ran at 210 or so in the summer and in winter barely even warmed up!!... I put in a water pump and thermostat and no better I was going to backflush the heater core as it seems to be the culprit. I ended up selling it before actually doing it, I did blockoff the radiator which helped out a lot though. Are both heater hoses hot?
 
"both heater hoses are as hot as the rad hose. " If the heater core was transferring heat into the passenger compartment, the return hose would be COOLER than the inlet hose. Not my logic, that's from the '01 Jeep manual. I'm thinking you should disconnect the hoses and blow both ways- see what comes out- if anything. I once saw a guy's hose blocked solid with crud, he thought anti freeze was a scam so he only used tap water! :blam: :wtf: My old Parcel Post diesel truck wouldn't even get warm without cardboard in front of the grill- it seems the maintenance garage felt no thermostat at all would prevent overheating in Summer.
 
there is a difference with the heat with the inlet and return hoses but it's not much. I can let it idle as long as I want and it won't ever get up to temp to open the 195º thermostat which is new and it did the same thing with the 195º thermostat I took out.

those "mechanics" who removed the thermostat don't understand that without a thermostat the flow is too fast to pick up the heat from the engine and gives you a false reading of what the temperature of the engine really is.
 
I had no heat in a Tercel beater a few years back and blew air both ways through the heater core and out came what I can only describe as a plug of old chewing tobacco. I had great heat after that.
 
Could that new thermostat be sticking open? If it is stopping or restricting the flow when cold like It should then the only other way for water to get passed the T-stat is through the heater.
