So I got a jeep shaft from the wreckers today but I need to know how I can get it to fit. It should compress right? How does one do this?

I believe there is this plastic insert that you have to melt. The one i pulled was loose so I didnt need to do anything. Although it could have been because I grabbed the one from the later models that has the aluminum joints instead of the steel or cast iron or whatever they are.

You need to remove the plastic sleeve, then use a torch in the center to loosen them up. Don't beat on it to free it up.

Dont use heat on the NACAM shaft. If you melt the plastic inserts you will create toxic formaldehyde gas and create slop in your steering shaft. The inserts are made of POM resin which is nasty stuff when burnt. I have had good luck by simply measuring the correct overall length and using a hydraulic press to compress it.
