The shorties are giving up 15-20hp. But depending on how you intend to use your car and what your 400 is, it probably will not be noticeable for a cruiser. A mildly built 400 should be in the 370-400hp range. On the street it is difficult to identify 370 vs 385. If it's a strip deal, then you'll notice in the time slips.

Long tubes make more torque, but last time I found an article on short vs long the difference was absolutely negligible near the 300hp mark. Engine Masters may have covered this as well with a healthier engine.

I put Hedman 66609 shorty headers on my El Camino with a '96 LT1 engine. 2 1/2" all through with an X pipe and long case Dynamax Super Turbo mufflers. I could not be any more happy. A drastic power improvement from the stock 305 exhaust system I was using before this.

V band clamps here. Every other joint is welded.

Roger1, I have what looks like the same headers and cross member that I will be using in an 83 El Camino. Is that exhaust a kit or did you make it up?

It's a Pypes kit.
I documented my install in this thread:

Roger, I just finished up a Pypes install on my Cutlass. Overall it's a really nice kit, but I had to spend an extra $100ish for stainless band clamps and a longer piece of pipe to extend from header to the X. Sounds good too!

Yes. Both cast iron and aluminum head LT1 engines have D port heads.

Edit:
I just browsed the Hedman website. It looks like the oval port version of these headers is 68606

Thanks for that info. They look like they have the same bends. No issues or tweaking them to fit ?

None. They fit perfect. Just a very minor change to the shifter linkage that I show a photo of in the other thread.
