actually, Delo still has plenty of zddp. It has 1200 ppmssn696 said:My machine shop loads every long block rebuild with Brad Penn. I use 4.5 qts of Castrol dino oil in most of my motors and add a bottle of Comp Cams break-in additive with each oil change. Summit sells a 12-pack for about $100.
Delo is primarily a diesel oil, like Shell Rotella. Both are also offered in 10W30 and 10W40. Many people swear by them for break-in. They are both a very good oils, but by federal law since 2007, neither has had zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP), the extreme-pressure additive that keeps old-school hydraulic cams and lifters from eating themselves during break-in and over time. If you have a roller cam, you don't need zinc. That's why all the auto manufacturers use roller cams these days.
My LS3 specifies 5W30 Mobil 1. I obey. Recently I re-ringed my 400 SBC with 80K on Mobil 1 and all it needed was a light hone for the ring break-in. 25+ oil changes at $30 is $800 of oil over the engine's lifetime. I think it was money well-spent. Note: don't use synthetic to break in a new motor- the rings won't wear in and you'll burn oil for the next 6000 miles. Shift to synthetic at about 5000 miles.
Others may have better opinions.
But, since you've been using a Mobil one, try Mobil 1's 15w50 version, it's for racing & has more zinc. Heck, you can find it at some walmarts.1Bad4558 said:I have about 4000 miles on my motor and I've been using Mobil one. But since I've been told about the zinc needing to be in the oil I've been doing some research and found only one that offers it. Valvoline vr1 racing oil is the only one I've found to have it. I've never used valvoline before does anyone have any opinions on it?
