I think what puzzles me most is the fact that the car is parked and literally forgotten. What goes thru a person's mind to do something like that? Even what Bob suggested about raising the car off the ground and provide some kind of shelter for it...whether it be a cover or one of those Shelter Logic deals.
A car cover is not necessarily a good idea when a car is stored outdoors. It can harbor dampness and humidity under the cover.

True story- I know a guy who owns a '64 GTO and forgot about it. He parked it at a friend's mother's house in 1977 or '78 because it was an extra car and he didn't really use it or have space for it. It was still in good shape, he just didn't have a use for it. He forgot about it until about 1998 or so, when his friend's mother passed away and his friend called him and said "hey we're selling the house and your car is still in the garage." He was like "what car?" His friend said "Your GTO, remember you parked it here way back when?" He told me he thought "Oh sh*t I forgot I even had it".

He put a battery and gas in it and it started up and ran fine. He ended up cleaning all the dust off of it and all the mildew out of the interior and underneath the dust it still looked the same as when he parked it. He still has it and drives it to car cruises in the summer. He is the original owner, so it's a true one-owner, tri-power, all original unrestored 1964 GTO. Pretty awesome.

That's an amazing story, Joe. Thanks for sharing it.
At first, I was almost expecting to hear one of those stories where your friend went off into the service and didn't return, or something to that effect.
I recall hearing stories of guys going off to the service, leaving their beloved rides behind and either lose interest in the cars, or lose their lives in battle. Many times the family doesn't have the heart to sell it because it's their only lasting connection to their son...or daughter.

Your friend must have been surprised and blown away that he had this awesome GTO parked in his friends garage. That's quite a story.

Not directly relevant but this touches my heart.
