Mallory ignition problem

I'm also surprised that it ran at all. It would start and idle (very rough) at about 1500 rpm but if I gave it any gas at all it would stall, if I put it in gear it would stall.

I have always set my timing to 38 deg. all in. I just wanted to know what others thought the best all in timing would be, is 40 deg. better than 38 deg. etc.

Will it start easier with 14 deg. opposed to 20 deg.

Just asking for your thoughts on this subject.

on the race car with a SBC we never went higher that 36 total timing. We run it at 34 and the lap time is no different between 36 and 34

I bought a new Mallory for my 307 after a new build and she just didn't want to work right . Had to advance when cold and pull it back when hot. what a PAIN!! plus ALL the issues you are having I had. So i gave up and threw in my old GM one and never had an issue. maybe the mallory is defective . Just a thought.

I think the only thing defective is my old dusty brain.

I'm sure some of you know what this is.

Here is what happens if you forget to put it in and then go for a test ride.

This thing ran for at least 20 minutes and 5 miles before the melt down.
I had spares of all the damaged stuff and everything works fine now.

how did it ever run....
I think the coil was arcing to the rotor causing enough heat to melt the plastic, it ran until the plastic rotor could no longer support the metal strap.

that's the way it worked but if you were 5 miles from home and you had to rig it up like that just to get you home it would not have worked..

it's great you took those pictures to show us what happened, some guys would have been shy to point out their mistake...like when I installed the remote solenoid to the plastic wheel well and took a friend to point out I might want to ground it... 😳

I don't mind pointing out my mistakes, that way someone may learn something without having to make the same mistake. I'm proud to be humble.
