Not knowing the condition of the oil in the engine or your budget I would consider doing a cheap oil change first before starting using autoparts store brand oil and filter and once you get it home do another oil change with your favorite quality brand oil and filter

Sounds like a great plan. Good luck. Will you have any issues with the smog stuff living in California?

Who knows...That's probably the next headache I'm going to have to deal with. For the time being, I plan on doing a PNO registration on it. The CA smog laws are that it only has to pass the smog laws for the model year of the vehicle. It was a CA-original car, but it had a rebuilt engine swap in TN, so I don't know if they tore off all the CA smog junk or not. It does have a newer-style cat, I believe. Once I get it running and driving, I will have to get it smogged, but as long as it's PNO, I don't think I have to worry about it.

The 3.8 should have a computer controlled Dualjet carb, AIR system, EGR, EVAP, and Thermac small snorkel aircleaner. For whatever reson, the 3.8s use really long cat converters, much longer than what the 305s use.
