Yesterday I walked by a house that was selling an LS swapped 86 Cutlass, claiming it was a 442. The for sale sign in the car was asking for $56,000. The car was painted Apple red, and while most of it did look nice, the hood had weird dents where the paint cracked and was rusting. Weird thing is the dents were raised, like somebody crudely hammered from under the hood up. Probably lazy clearancing for the LS swap. No ideal what type of LS it has.

Used Hellcats are cheaper.

Last month new 2019 widebody scat packs were cheaper. Not sure what the price is now as they were MSRP a little over $50K. With the discount in October they had one at the local dealership for $48K. And new 2019 Camaro SS's, and new 2019 Mustang GT's....point is, there's NO SINGLE STOCK 78-88 G-BODY ever worth $50K. NONE. If you pay $50k for any of them you're an idiot. Unless you're getting 2 very low mile examples at once. Then maybe.

EDIT: Update- 2019 Challengers are still on sale until 12/02/19. Another month of $10/HP savings. So the widebody scat pack is STILL cheaper than this 88 Cutlass.

Didn't an 87 GNX sell for 200K with 8.6 Miles or something on BaT earlier this year? Id say that car has some Value. Never 200K that is just insanity.

Some IDIOT may have paid that much, but it's not worth it. May not be worth 50K either. At least not right now. That's my opinion. Others may differ. But, if you count inflation, that car would be worth about 65K new back in 1987 in today's dollars. So MAYBE that one example could be worth around sticker price adjusted for inflation.

But, cars with no miles on them sit forever and deteriorate right before your eyes. You'll need to restore the car to get it right again. Which means even more money.

The thing I don't understand is how someone could buy a new car and not drive it even 1000 miles in 30+ years.....

Assuming you paid average of around 16,000 for that 88 (not sure of the actual price, but we'll just say it was 16K).

In 1988, if you bought 315 shares of Kimberly Clark (equivalent approx. $16,000, the cost of the 88 Cutlass when new), and sat on it (not even taking into account the cost of storing the car), you would be sitting on approximately $385,000 today. You could take $50K of it, and give it to the idiot with the 88 Cutlass, and still have $335,000 left over AND the Cutlass this guy has. So you got to ask yourself- are cars worth the trouble of buying and not driving them? Even at an ABSURD $50K asking price, you're still looking at a 30-year income if you stuffed it under the mattress of around $930 per month before taxes. While you're out driving the 88 Cutlass you just bought.

You are absolutely correct. My investments netted me more income in the last year than what I have ever "made" (broke even) on any car I have owned.
If i could go back and do it all over again I wouldn't have dumped nearly 20K into my Camaro when I was 17. Its funny because the month I bought that thing was the same time Google had its IPO. I was set to invest the money I had saved for 3 years working 3 jobs into Google. But my dad thought it was too risky and talked me out of it.

Lets just say pop's stays out of my investments these days!
Although nobody ever would have expected an ROI of nearly 1,415.39% over a decade if I got in on the IPO.

Hindsight is 20/20 🙂

The real point I was trying to make is if you are going to passively invest in 1988 and do nothing with it for the next 30 years, a Cutlass Supreme Classic wasn't the car to do it. Invest it in stocks or land or anything other than a car. I mean, you could save all your money since you started to earn money and have a mountain of it later in life as well, but you need to live life too. Balance is the key.

Buying a house, a car, and "toys" and vacation trips, etc., are all things to enjoy and experience so investing 20K into a Camaro at 17 is just part of the deal. I invested 13K in a new Camaro Z28 in 1982. But I DROVE that puppy. No regrets.
