we just picked up a GP that was sitting for 10 years......we dropped in a battery and fired her up and she ran great till we reved the crap out of it and blew a rocker......I'd do what mega suggested and turn it over by hand a few times. After you install the engine I'd turn the oil pump with a drill until the oil pressure builds up and there's oil throughout the engine

imma take that into condiseration.....i also have a 77 gp thats been sittin for over ten yrs in our garage...i plan on gettin into that next year...hasnt been strtd or nothin...an thats one thing i was afraid of for that one....

in that case, pull the plugs and spray PB blaster in the cylinders and since the intake is off spray the rockers and valves. let it sit overnight. then respray it and rotate it by hand.
also, drain the oil and inspect it for water. if there's only a little water you're good.
after you install the motor, repeat the PB blaster and rotate with the starter--this will also get your oil pressure up. after you get it running, do a quick break in--vary the engine speed from 1k-3k for about 10-20min, then change the oil and filter. this should clear out any rust and water.

i would not think about rotating the engine with the starter until I primed the engine first. Pull the dist. and spin the oil pump until the oil pressure comes up and then run it for a minute or two.

how do u know wen the oil is up....how do i hook up an oil guage ..i have the light

if you have a valve cover off you'll see the oil flow up the pushrods and once that happens I'd let the drill turn a few more seconds....you'll also hear the strain on the drill when the oil is being pumped through the engine..

if you do want to hok up a gauge there are aftermarket gauges that have instructions or if you want to hook up an OEM gauge you'll need the sender unit and you can use the existing wiring

do i need the sender unit on an aftermarket guage

cause wen i go to summit all i see is mechanical...which is better to get

rotating an engine with the starter doesn't do any real damage, if there's no load on it. if the plugs are out you're ok. remember, except in extreme cases a used engine will still have some oil in the bearings, and a new engine will have assembly lube.
when i pulled apart my engine, it'd been outside for 3+years and had water filling a couple of cylinders, but the bearings were still oilled. (not that i'm saying i'd use the engine as is--it went through a complete rebuild)

mechanical gauges are the most accurate and reliable--if you get a decent one! sunpro or whoever it is makes absolute crap, that's why they're cheap.
