motors?

around my area it's almost impossible to find anything but chev. i want to get an olds 350 for my cutlass and a buick motor for my regal but 350 anything but chev is as common as a unicorn in the maratimes. i want to keep it buick so i figured i'd use the v6 and up the power some so maybe the gas milage will even out. but then again i figure that might make it as economic or less than a 350. the main reason i wanted to keep it v6 is because every one wants a 350 in their car because no one likes a v6 or 305.

the problem is rebuilding it and making it have enough power to not be gutlass and still economic with gas. i figured with a v6 and a 2:71 rear(? i'm not good with gears other thaqn 4:11 and 3:73) plus a trans with over drive it could be ecnomic. the main thing i want is to have it buick powered eventually, posi rear and economic enough that i wont feel bent over everytime i go to the pump.

what do you guys suggest? some of you have said the 350 might be better than a v6 for that but could i make the v6 more powerful so it's not working to hard to move the car? like the gn motor?

The few V6's I've owned were only good for local driving. Whenever I had to merge into highway traffic I felt like I was flirting with death

I think a 30mph roll to 65mph was about 20 seconds. I remember yelling at the car, "C'MON, C'MON, C'MON!!!"
I finally got sick of the damn engine and revved it to the moon on purpose. I blew the water pump gasket but it still ran fine.

 It told you. BTW, you can blow one up. My sister blew mine up wHile I was in basic training. The shift indicator wasn't dead on and apparently it must be different than every other car P R N D 2 1 :? She drove it about 20 miles in 1st gear  I don't understand why somebody can't realize that 3 clicks from P is D in every automatic :!: :x

Back to the topic... 8)
Just build a turbo Regal

haha i was thinking that. my cousin gave me the idea because i bought it, gave it to him as a gift and now i'm buying back from him. he said i could do a budgit one and snag a turbo off a volvo, put in on to the v6 and custom fab some pvc pipe etc. for the time being i will be dropping the 305 in it. i'm just wondering for future referance. th emain thing is i want it or my cutlass running my prom in june and the regal seems to need way less work

Do you have any pictures up of the Regal yet :?:

Keep in mind, switching to the 305, you will not be able to use the accessory brackets and such from the original engine. If you already have the brackets then you're fine. The frame mounts will have to be swapped out with ones for a Monte Carlo with a 305  PN#602-1179  And the exhaust will have to be customized to bolt to the new engine as well
There are other details as you get into the swap 8)

will the motor mounts and exhaust fit from my cutlass on the regal my big question was also if all the gbody frames are the same (i'm assuming so)? and yep here's some photos viewtopic.php?f=8&t=21710.

i may have a front clip coming to me for 150 i'm just waiting on the call back

i'm also thinking on keeping the rag top. fixing underneath it but putting one back on

Does your Olds have a Chevy or an Olds engine :?:

The frames on the Cutlass, Regal, GrandPrix and Monte Carlo's are the same

Decent looking car too. Surprised to see those fillers are still in tact. My fillers were all good when I got my Regal a couple of years ago and all but 1 has gotten destroyed since. My front left got hit in a parking lot and the rear ones I screwed up trying to push the car (bumper to bumper) with an S10 :blam:

i've got 3 cutlasses an 88, 84 and a second 84. one 84 has a 305 (i'm not sure if it's an olds or a chev). the second one has a 355 which i was told was a chevy. and my 88 has a 305 with 350 heads and i was told it was an olds motor but still not 100% sure on it. yeah the guy who owned it before my managers husband sold scrap and accidentally dropped a car on it and smashed the grill and part of a light bucket. he said he'd replace it but low and behold, that never happened.

for 500 and the cost of towing it i think it's a good buy. plus i have a good amount of universal parts from my cutlass cars to fix my 88 and regal luckaly

If you have a "5.0 liter" it could be a 305 Chevy or a 307 Olds. There is no 305 Olds. The Olds will have the big oil fill tube up front the Chevy won't.

I had a '79 Century wagon with a 231 V6 and an '83 Cutlass wagon with a 307.
No question, the 307 had much better performance, no question, the 231 gave much better gas mileage.
I always found the 231 had adequate rather than ample power, nevertheless it undertook towing and load carrying duties perfectly well.
A well built V6 can be made to give both good mileage and enough power to keep up with traffic for much less work than making a good job of installing a V8.
The 3.8 has been power plant for a lot of GMs mainstream cars for years and parts are very easy and cheap to find.
Just my opinion, I think I may be in minority here.

PS, I know the sbc is GMs top engine in production #s, I have a feeling the Buick V6 may be # 2, anyone able to correct me on this?.

Roger.
