I would use this as a guide to get an idea depending on what you have done to your car already.

Are you sure it is a Vin 9 car? I thought the 307 HO was only available in the Hurst/Olds or 442. Does it have a dual snorkel air cleaner? Does it have the normal early style full harmonic balancer, yes the lower performance earlier models, some anyways also had the same small harmonic balancer the Vin Y had. Basically other than air cleaner, balancer, richer carb, exhaust, really the hotter .440" lift cam and stiffer valve springs were only internal differences.

A good cam is something fairly mild. With 8.3 to 1 or 7.9 to 1 compression for the roller 307, I would go slightly larger than the Vin 9 cam, especially if the computer is being used. Don't buy the Edelbrock or generic 204/214 cam, too lazy. Something like the Lunati high efficiency series cam 207/207 .461/.461 112 lsa should do fine. I ordered a custom cam from Mark Remmel for my Olds 350, he knows the Olds V8. Contact him at [email protected] if you are serious.

Well I guess, change of plans!
Excuse my limited knowledge of this stuff but this is what I've gathered from the mechanic
There are two noises coming from the motor, one is more of a tick and the other is a slight knock under load (giving it gas to pull out he hears this noise)
He thought that the noise was coming from underneath the valve covers but he tried adjusting stuff (? Can't remember rockers maybe? I could tell you what they look like lol) but the noise continued.
He said the motor has been rebuilt at some point, everything looked clean and not gunky and without taking the intake off he thinks its had a mild cam put in it.... but in a nutshell the stock internals aren't handling whatever was done to it (he also thinks it's been bored). He was very confident that I could drive the car even daily for a couple years (it'll be my weekend warrior car so I'm not worried)

Long story short, instead of pouring money into fixing whatever could be wrong with this 307, I'm going to have an LS swap done. Easy Peasy. (I think) HA!
