Is this car red with ttops?

You said you bought it in Erie Pa?

First off, not to be a dick, but punctuation helps make it easier to read what you wrote.

Second, if it is the car I am thinking about, from 18th street in Erie, I looked at that car. Yes, it is a salon, no its not a 442. The rear frame rails needed help, the floorpans were shot. No buckets, and the interior was mostly dissasembled.

Had it been a real 442, I would have bought it, as I was the first person to look at it. lol 😀

Good luck with it.

so that would explain y i wouldnt have a posi rear end and it has the 307 in it and as far as i know the only salons that came with that was the 442 it has the 4 speed shifter and everything sooo idk the floors were shot yea the frame rails are okay sooo idk what u were lookn at and i have almost all the interior so im good now gonna take pics soon of the restorration

Trust me, I know the car. If its a Cutlass in Erie for sale, I know about it. There are 2 other guys besides myself that are Olds fanatics here in Erie. Brian Trick or Nate Brosig are the other two.

The 8th digit in the vin is a Y, which denotes the 307. Salons could be had with the v8 or v6. Didnt matter as it was an option. Same with the posi rear. It could be ordred either way. Same with the Cutlass Supreme.

Only the Salons came with bucket seats though, and the 442 was based off the Salon model. (except for the 87 442, which was based off the Supreme).

I saw that red salon being towed down 79 a little bit ago (a month or more, cant remember exactly). They wanted 1200 when I looked at it, as they thought it was a 442. I was off work that day, and about 4 minutes after they posted it to craigslist, (just happed to be searching it at the time), called them, shot down there and told them exactly what they had, told them they werent going to get 1200 for it, and probably no more than 600 in the shape it was in. Then I left when they told me "oh its worth more than that, blah blah". :roll:

Of course they were checking out my 87 since I drove it to look at the car. lol

Anyways, good luck with the build.

If it is what Hunter is saying, it is just a Cutlass Salon. They are a very good starting point as they have bucket seats, console, rally gauges, etc.

Can you post a pic? We will be able to tell you what you have for sure.

The VIN tells all... Look at the 8th digit.

Y= Regular Cutlass Salon
9= 442

A bit late to the party on this one, but 442s all having limited slip is a common misnomer. The fact of it being a Salon or a 442 has absolutely NOTHING to do with whether it has G80 (limited slip) or not. It only was limited slip if the dealer added it a la carte, as it was never included in any package, or option grouping levels. In fact, a good many Hursts and 442s did not have G80 because of this very reason; most dealers were too lazy, or weren't informed on how, to correctly order a car with limited slip. Usually it was the customer requesting G80.

But I would trust the VIN. Doesn't matter how well it's made to look like one, if it has the original VIN, it'll tell you.

Look at the options tag in the trunk if its still there. This might help. Its the 6x8 tag with all numbers stuck to the trunk lid by the left middle side. And sometimes there's is build sheet under the rear seat cushion.

RPO stickers, and build code sheets have and can be wrong. VIN trumps sticker. Match the VIN with the RPO sticker as the trunklid could have been swapped, or the factory messed up and put the next car's RPO sticker (albeit rare, there's documented evidence that this has happened) on the car. My own case, I found a broadcast sheet for a similarly optioned car a couple VIN numbers previous to mine on my gray 85 442 I used to have.
