Usually a 5/8" tap will thread thru the pilot bushing. Thread in till it bottoms, keep turning and the bushing threads out. Basically the same as your bolt. If the ID of the bearing is worn out go one size larger on the tap. Was your crankshaft machined to Mondello's blueprint specs?

I'm not sure. It was done when Trimble built it. It is a regular 1.09 GM bushing, though.

At least you didn't do what those people do on LS stuff where they try to get the pilot out and use the bread trick but blow the oil gallery plug out and fill their crank oil passages with a loaf of bread...

Hmm, Mr Trimble is a lot smarter than me. I wish I'd seen this sooner. I feel the 1.09" bearing/bushing is the way to go. Being "oldschool" I dug out my Mondello book at used his dimensions. If I live long enough to need anymore, I'll "steal" that idea. I used Auto Gear pilot bushings and gave the bushings along with Mondello's blueprint to the machine shop when I had two 425s and one 455 crankshafts machined. Yes, it was a nightmare getting it done.
On another note, I have a fresh 403 plus 0.040 on the stand. I've read your, plus others, stories about using the "sneaker" pilot bearing adapter. The later crankshafts were machined with a 3rd "ledge." If one uses the middle step, there's plenty of clearance before the snout would bottom out. The OD the bearing/bushing would have to be is 1.361" an nobody makes a bearing/bushing that size. Dorman has a bushing 1.3815". The picture I've included shows the high-tech mandrel used to reduce the bushing to 1.361". Hopefully it'll work out.

Transfered the reverse detent, and installed the seals.. Ths AutoGear piece is definitely beefier! They even have the vent predrilled and plugged.

Stuck the pilot bearing in the freezer. Ran out of time having to run the kid to the tack store for chaps and making homemade pizza dough.

How long before the gear arrives?
