Another thing to keep in mind undoing & fixing other mechanics mistakes/poor work adds to the bill. Stuff like that is something that is unavoidable at times. There are alot of guys who can work on cars but fewer that do it right.

Yeah he made everything compatable for a v8 the car was originally a v6 so he upgrades fuel lines etc..its hard to communicate with him while I'm overseas but he's fixed a lot of things that where wrong or incorrect..i had no motor accessories or anything

I don't want to know what I've spent on my car, and I'm doing all the work. My brother has way more in his 78 Z28 than its worth. I'd like to see the itemized list but my guess is he's not out of line. As stated before, thanks for your service. Here's wishing you a safe return soon.

Best,

Jared

Thanks man I'll be home by the end if the year hopefully!! Would be a great Christmas gift for my family!! And yeah I'm in deep and haven't even touched the outside yet but ill definitely be doing all the cosmetic stuff myself. I know im already in it more than it's worth but it'll be around the family for a long time.

As the others have said, I don't believe his bill is bad at all! I did my first swap at 19, albeit I bought mostly top of the line parts for the accessories, carb, shiney stuff etc, did all the work myself with the exception of the engine being machined, and was in deeper than $7K real quick!!!! I saved all my receipts back then, and started adding them up. I got to about $13K and became nauseous lol!!!!

Since then, I just buy what I need, save the receipt for return or warranty purposes, then move to the next part! I have a rough idea of how much $$$ I have in my cutlass, and it's WAY more than the value of the car!!!! The "budget" LS swap I'm working now has turned out to be anything but! Hell, I dropped $250 this week on a lifter kit and head gaskets and still have a ways to go!!!!

Just get stateside safely, and enjoy the GP to the fullest man!!!!

Lol thanks man you guys are making me feel a whole lot better about the money being spent. It was a little scary seeing that invoice but I only owe 1600 more and that should be paid by my birthday which is a month a way so it'll be a great birthday gift lol

The only thing you are probably going to regret is not going with a bigger powerplant. Of course that will just keep exposing other weak links, costing more money. LOL.

Stay safe my brother in arms.

I've seen basic engine swaps cost $450 to $750 in just labour, parts extra, oil, filter and so on.

You change the whole power plant, so added another core price plus machine shop from $1500 to $3000 depending on how extreme. Then fuel lines and labour couple hundred. Then your exhaust depending on duels and type another $700 to $1500 an up. It doesn't take long.

Every car l've built for myself by myself has cost more than its appraisal, but it's build with what l want in it.

My 78 El Camino cost me $14,000 to build Appraised at $11,300. Any car you build to what you want the end result is you'll spend more than its worth but you built it for you as an extension of you. And that's why we do this, for US!!
