Need to know what transmission I have.

Very little. the shifter is the same if it is a column shift car, only the indicator on the dash is different and you can do without that if you like. The trans crossmember and trans mount are the only things that need to be changed. Just get the crossmember, mount and hardware from the donor car at the time you pull the trans. If you get it from other than a G body, just be sure it is not a Cadillac with the 4100 V8 as it does not interchange according to the Hollander listing. You will also want a shorter rear gear when you do the swap because it will lug the engine with the 2.41 axle most V6 cars came with. If you have the 3.23 axle, keep it. It's one of the best factory street gears offered in a G body. Oh, the driveshaft is the same, so is the starter and the speedo cable and TCC plug also plug in to the Th200 4R from a TH200C.

The list of what I used in my 350/TH200 4R for 3.8/TH200C swap can be found at this link: http://gbodyforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=2020 I include more than necessary for a bare bones swap, but I like cars that have everything functional like the factory would have made it had it made it.

Ok, what are the most common g-bodys to come with the 200-4r and what gears come with the car if it does? I got the crappy 2.41s, and its a non posi so it will be going.

Pretty much any V8 1984 or newer G body would have had it as an option, and 1984 or newer Turbo Regals had them as standard equipment. It was also standard in the Monte SS of those years and the Cutlass 442/Hurst/Olds from 84-88 as well. 84 is the key year as earlier G bodies did not have the frame provision for the farther rearward crossmember mounting boss on the frame. Thus it is unlikely any were ever built with this trans. As with the TH700 R4/4L60, newer models are the best, oldest the weakest. Ones out of performance models are also better than mom and pop variants. They were also used in B bodies and D bodies ( Big Caddys), but the Cad versions behind the HT4100 aluminum V8 do not interchange with the others. Ones from Olds 307 powered Cad's probably will work however. You may even get lucky and find a fresh rebuild in the junkyard as I did on a recent hunting expedition. I found many behind the HT4100, but several in 305 Caprices and Parisiennes' and also 307 powered Delta 88 Regencies and Park Avenues. If you have a U pull it yard like we do around here, that's your best bet. They charge $60 for any transmission-Porsche, Yugo whatever as long as it's a transmission at the one I go to. I scored a 3.23 open diff rear axle for $50, which is a good street gear with the TH200 4R. It was optional on 3.8 V6/TH200C cars, mainly those intended for high altitude areas. I think the data sticker code is GU4, located under the trunk lid on the G body. I got mine off a 4 door 83 Regal. I have also seen some Gov Lok posi's in S trucks with a 3 series carrier that go for around $35. The trick with that, would be to swap the ring gear off the G body rear to the diff from the truck and bolt it all back together before you go to checkout. Presto! 3.23 posi rear for $50.

Charlie, I'd look for a 7.5 posi rear before you do the trans.. I got one off ebay for around $100 and some used 3.73's for $50.

You want the 26 spline, 3 series. You can get the series 2 units, but you'll have to run the 'thick gear' or a spacer so run 3.42's or 3.73's.

Dont get the gov lock ones that look like this:

You want this style:

If your trans is still going good, do the rear end swap first... best change for the buck.

Thanks Tony. I was under the impression, that I had to change out the whole axle to change it to posi. I also had a discussion with my buddy whos helping me with the car. We wernt sure whether it was wise to change the gearing in the rearend first or after I had everything else in.

85 Cutlass Brougham

So any g body made in 84 or newer, and a v8 will have the overdrive. And it be a good idea to stay away from caddys.

Nope Charlie, just swap out the unit itself and you're set. You can keep the same housing and axles.

I run a set of 3.42's with my 200-4r trans. Its a good combo. I turn about 2500 doing 70-75.

Not a great feedback trail on that seller!

You got to read the comments and the buyers who are leaving him these negs. I sell on ebay and believe me, there are some knuckleheads who can make you look bad.
