pour a small amount of fresh fuel down the carb. it should at least try to fire if either carb or fuel is the issue.

Last time we did that it fired until the fuel burned off.
I didn't try it today.
there you go- fuel/filter/pump/carb

have you confirmed the new regulator is allowing enough fuel and psi? pull the line off of the carb and roll it over filling a bottle or jar to confirm flow

If the car has sit a long time there could be lots of crud in the tank. That could easily clog a filter or carb

backfiring out the carb sounds like your timing is advanced too far, its igniting before the intake valve is closed.

This may be a stupid question but which way should I turn. The distributor to back the timing off? Clockwise or counterclockwise?

I have a gauge in line just before the carb. My order is tank, pump, filter, gauge, carb.
Pressure is not the same as flow but the pressure doesn't drop.

for SBC

Distributor rotation as viewed from the top, is clockwise, to the right.

Firing order is 1 - 8 - 4 - 3 - 6 - 5 - 7 - 2

Driver side is numberd front to back, 1 - 3 - 5 - 7
Pass side is numbered front to back, 2 - 4 - 6 - 8
Turn dist clockwise to retard

That makes sense. Thanks.

Clockwise will retard
Counter Clockwise will advance

Like mentioned above I would block the fuel line and just dump a little gas down the carb to get it to fire. You could have a float stuck open or something else allowing way too much fuel into the motor flooding it out. If you pull the plugs again run a propane torch over them to get the hot enough to burn off the gas before you re-install.

You mentioned finding your spark tester, how is it reading ? I am old-school so I stick a screwdriver into the plug boot and look for a nice clean blue spark when it's cranking over.

I haven't had a chance to use the tester. its a basic one, just lets you see a spark without pulling the plug from the motor. Similar to having an extra spark plug I guess.

I have another set of plugs that are new. I will try them instead. They are also 1 stage warmer of a plug so they shouldn't foul as easily. (shouldn't)

Not sure when I will get a chance to play with it but likely one night this week.

On another note Axisg (George right?) I saw in another thread you posted about 6x9 speaker mounting in the back deck by cutting a groove in the seat-back. Any pictures of this? Do you still have my email?

Really I didn't think to take any pics when the seatback was out, however with the sub-box back in I am chasing down a rattle when the music is turned up. If I pull the seatback I will snap some pics and email them to you.

I'm sure I can figure it out.
Sounds pretty self explanatory. Obviously not priority over the car running but sometimes you need to work on something else and clear your head.

if your getting alot of backfires while starting it is possible that you are 180 degrees off on the distributor easy mistake
