hi all, im Don. back in the day i was a gm certified tech and a drag racer. i built many second gen camaros and sadly sold my 87 monte ss twin turbo before i got a chance to play with it. 12 years ago i became a dad and after much talk with the wife hung up my car habit. now I'm divorced with a big garage, a 12yr old girl who is dying to build a car with dad from looking at all my old pictures.
i just scored a 1980 malibu off a friend. it is rough. body wise strait but whoever had it was big into systems and butchered the rear panels (sheet metal too) and the wiring harness is destroyed. he also put a iroc camaro dash panel and center console on the car which actually looks pretty cool. but the grand marquee seats front and rear have got to go lol.
my plans are to pull the frame from the body. make sure everything is good then clean and get it powder coated. I'm thinking tube suspension and coil overs. i would also like to do full disc brakes. instead of strait line racing I'm thinking just a nice beast to cut turns in.
powerplant wise i haven't decided yet. probably will be a small block unless some amazing ls deal comes to my door. overall with my budget ill be in the 400-500hp range. i do have the itch to do another supercharged car so who knows lol.
I've already been cruising the forum looking at ideas. and i am a decent fabricator and welder. i weld railroad track on the mail line for amtrak these days and am a former ironworker from nyc.
pretty much any of the junkyards around me don't allow you to pull stuff anymore. you have to call in the parts you want. and since I'm in a stable job and no rush I'm thinking new or reman parts mostly unless its real hard to find. i will be cruising to forum but any tips or build ideas anyone wants to copy to this post would be appreciated.
