Well, I've got the engine and transmission ready to pull out, hoping to be able to borrow a cherry picker next weekend and get it done so I can start on the fron suspension and cleaning up the engine bay. A friend of mine used to have an '87 Monte SS that he bought Eibach springs for but never installed, he's going to give them to me, and it looks like the car already has a TH350 but I still need to confirm that once it's out. So far the plans are as follows,
Build up the stock 300hp 350 with a Performer RPM air gap intake, Edelbrock 600cfm carb, headers, cam (not sure what grind to use yet), maybe roller rockers, rebuild the TH350 and add a shift kit and 2400 stall converter, upgrade the ignition.
All new suspension, a close ratio steering box, posi rear end
Still deciding if I want to tackle changing out the AC box to a non-AC system.
Re-do the interior, still deciding on changing to bucket seats and a console with floor shift or not.
Complete dual exhaust system
Have the car repainted and get some of the minor bodywork done that it needs.
I figure I'm going to be at least a couple of years picking away on this stuff, but I can't wait for it to be done lol!
New update. Picked up a 3:73 posi rear end out of an '87 Monte SS this past weekend. Still haven't gotten around to pulling the engine, dying to do that so we can start working on the front suspension and engine bay. I've decided I'm going to leave the bench seat and column shift in the car instead of going with buckets and console. I figured it's less work that way and I won't have to find as many parts.
Isn't he a chevy guy with a Pontiac car? I like the body in part because its different and not belly button. Any ideas what you are going to do for wheels? Pontiac ralleys or aftermarket?
Looks like an excellent car to start with plus it sounds like you already are plugging away at it. Welcome to the site and keep us posted with updates, pictures never hurt as well!
I haven't completely decided on wheels yet. I'm leaning towards the GM rally wheels with the rings and caps ('vette rallies as everyone calls them). I saw a picture from another member on here (can't remember his name at the moment) who has a red LeMans like mine with them, I thought they looked pretty good. I'm actually pretty sure I'm going to go with that style, just not sure if I'll stick with 14" or go to 15". Also not sure if I'll have them painted body colour, silver, or black. Another option is Monte SS wheels.
Hey man, welcome to the board and glad to see another cannuck eh! Love your lemans! Mine also came with a bench seat and columm shift. I was going to change it out for buckets until my wife sat in the car and slid to the middle of the seat and stayed here. I love my bench.
As to the wheels, why not stick to a traditional pontiac wheel? I have 15 inch snowflakes on mine and there is a guy near my work with a 78 wearing 16 inch wheels from a 87 T/A.
I've been thinking about the buckets and console swap, and I think it's a lot of extra work and money for not a lot of benefit. I'm trying to keep this project at as low a cost as possible and still end up with a well built, good looking car at the end. I was looking at your album (deanlemans81), the car looks great! I like the snowflake wheels, but I also like the wheels pictured on your buddies Malibu. Do you know if he's had any problems with tire rub or clearance with the 8" wheels? The reason I was leaning more towards the rallies is that I like the way they look and they're easier to get. You can buy brand new reproduction ones. I figure trying to find a good set of used OEM wheels will be tough, and likely cost just as much. I've got lots of time though, the wheels and tires will be one of my last purchases.
