Oil and Filters

One of the things to remember about oil weights is that you SHOULD NOT run a heavy oil in a newer engine!!! The tolerances are much tighter and are designed with thinner oils in mind. A 15w 40 is fine in the engine families our old cars came with, but running it in a modern engine like an LSX or a small displacement import engine could cause issues. For example, I run nothing heavier than 10w 30 in my Nissan pickup, even though it has 320,000 miles. That is what the manufacturer recommends (that or 5w 30), and it has never given me any trouble yet. As for my Cutlass, it also gets 10w 30 in the winter, but I sometimes use 10 or 15w 40 in the summer.

Sorry for the delay in responding, it's been hectic here!!

Thanks everyone for the information, what you run & tested and your results.

Very timely post.

I posted a question on Brad Penn oil site at the end of last week.

Guess who walked in my door after lunch, Gary Cornell from Brad Penn.

He was here for about 2 hours. I grilled him good!!!

I already use thier oil and now feel even more comfortable doing so.

They have break-in oil and well as one,if not the best, zinc packages out there.

Shotgun,
Does Brad Penn ship their products, or do you have to go thru a local dealer?

Jack

Dealer only, I did tell him the oil is hard to get.

They are updating their site to include a "find local dealer" prompt.

It "may" end being sold at a National Chain in the not to distant future.

He assured me that if you contact them threw their email section onthier site, you will get a return call telling you where to get it.

He wrote down a page of my suggestions/comments.

I get mine threw Spotts Perfromance (1/2 mile from my shop 😀 ).

Thanks man!
I appreciate your reply. I'll check out some of the local speed shop chains.
They may now have a distributorship with Brad Penn.
I'll also check back on their website.

If I'm not mistaken, their racing oil is a synthetic blend..?

conventional oil is no match to synthetic oil and grease

I would think a blend is still one notch better than a straight conventional oil.
I have used straight synthetic in my car over the years.

Amsoil, Castrol Syntec, and Mobil 1. and also Rotella T synthetic.

but why degrade synthetic oil by blending it with conventional oil?...

and looking at Penn oil I don't see anything that says it's blended with synthetic.

That's a good point. Synthetic oil in itself has beneficial qualities. For one, it allegedly doesn't break down like conventional oil and supposed to run lower crankcase temps. At least this is what I've read over time.

Somewhere I thought that one of the oils offered by Brad Penn was a blend.
Perhaps I got my lines crossed when I was researching various brands.

I wouldn't mind sticking to synthetic, but I'm concerned about the lack of ZDDP in most oils available.
