Wondering what would cause my oil pressure to drop. Used to be at 20psi at a light and 40psi on the highway. Then shortly after the clutch on the fan gave out and the engine hit 260-280 degrees, the oil pressure dropped to barely 10 psi at a stop and 20 psi on the highway. Someone mentioned that it may be the crankshaft bearings. Any other ideas?

Anytime you over heat it (or spike it like that) you should change the oil, it could have caused your oil to break down a bit, which could cause a drop in pressure.

Jesus, 260-280 is ****ing hot!
You should've shut it off before it went past 240.

I'd agree that the crank bearings probably got smoked.
There's a good chance your rings are damaged as well.

Your bearings and crank are smoked. I had a lot of overheating problems. I finally fixed them but not till I toasted an almost perfect crank and bearings. Get ready to pull it.

i guess your just gunna have to put a stroker kit in it then.. 😀 thats just to bad lol. if your gunna rebuild it you might as well make it worth the work

It runs perfectly fine, no smoke, ran like a bat out of hell. There was a very subtle knock afterwards. What sucked was I drove to a store nearby and it wasn't hot. Then I drive a 1/2 mile down to another store and I pulled in and all of a sudden I look like a locomotive when I popped my hood. Blowing brown water out of the catch tank to the point I couldn't touch the cap. I just didn't notice the temp gauge at the time. I had replaced the stupid clutch fan with a straight clutch and somehow it gave out.

So If I take this engine out and its as bad as the piston rings being done, and the bearings and crank being done, then the malibu is gonna sit and it'll be the roadrunner's turn. I drove that malibu for a good, solid 4-5 years and beat the snot out of it. If I take the engine out and it's bad, then I'll just sell the block and trans and go find a big block chevy and put that in.

I know mopars are expensive, but because all the parts are there, and I'm NOT doing a custom build on the roadrunner, then it should not be nearly as expensive as the malibu. Most of the parts are going to get rebuilt with most of the money getting tied into the interior and paint. The engine, whether I decide on the 440 or #'s 383, it is going to be a factory rebuild with a slightly larger cam, aluminum intake, and headers. Nothing radical, that way its a fun 4 speed drive that will still kick most mustangs a**es. I've got a lot of buddies who have tons of extra parts including some old DP4B intakes and another guys with 12 426 hemis, 18 440's, and tons of other blocks and parts. I walk into his garage and try not to drool.

That's because you smoked your bearings!

What is a "straight clutch"?
There's a clutch fan, and then there's a solid fan, or "clutchless fan".
It's impossible for a clutchless fan to "give out" because there's nothing to give out. It's directly bolted to the motor.

Even if new rings and bearings are needed, that's a couple weekends worth of work and a few hundred dollars to get the crank polished and a fresh set of bearings and rings.
As opposed to...

You're looking at I'd say $12K+ (if you do everything yourself) between the motor, paint & body, and interior.
I bet the car will be apart for 3 or 4 years.

Still wanna do the Road Runner first? 😛
