I'm looking at buying a new HEI DISTRIBUTOR for my 87 cutlass y code with a 307, my question is can I go with the chromoly gear or do I have to go with the bronze

With roller cams you typically want the bronze gear, if that is what cam is still in your engine.

THe thing that kind of sucks about roller cams, especially older ones, is that the 307 wasn't initially designed for one. Make sure your cam endplay is within spec or you will chew up whatever gear you put on there. Bronze gears are a wear item. You just replace them every so often. Chromoly would be considered by many to be too hard of a gear and it would have a chance to chew up the cam gear, requiring a new cam. Best to replace a distributor gear than a cam and/or lifters.

I believe the melonized gears are acceptable, see if the gear off your distributor will fit. Bronze may wear quickly. I assume you swapping carbs as well? The Street Demon 625 cfm will give you the best of both worlds on your 307.
