sup every body ok so i got a 87 cutlass from my uncle a freebee it had a olds 307 in it dat he swapped with a buick 350 the problem is he didnt kno the real milage what year the engine was or anything he just saw bigger numbers on the block plus it was cheap now that i have it i want to rebuild it but i need to figure out the basics im a chevy person but the car was free so now im goin to rebuild the motor or i might put a sbc in it depending on what i can find out about a buick
The last year for the buick 350 was 80 and I believe the first year was 68. The wear from the oil pump gears seems to be the most common issue with the Buick engines.
Pretty much what I have heard about Buick engines is that parts are really expensive, but you really don't need to put many performance parts on them to make them powerful.
Buick, like Olds was designed for low end torque. Decent compression, cam and headers should wake it up. Oil pump clearance needs to be checked when rebuilt. They are a very light, torquey motor, with an aluminum intake you will be around 400 pounds. They are square bore and stroke, no need to rev it sky high.
That seems to be the popular belief, but the Olds 350 has a shorter stroke and larger bore than a Chevy 350. In theory, with good heads, it should perform better than the Chevy at the top end. Of course, RPM on the Olds is limited by the two bolt mains and the large diameter journals, but the latter can be fixed.
