Olds 350 making noise

I had a chevy 305 make the same noise from the crank area, pulled belts off no difference, replaced balancer/timing chain same noise. After putting it back together and running it for a few hours the connecting rod snapped in half. While pulling the engine out found the previous owner didn't bolt the torque convertor to the flexplate.
So to make a long story short I would check the easy stuff around the crank area first since it sounds like you are positive that is where its coming from.

Check your harmonic damper. I had one come apart and it made a squealing sound.

Wouldn't a broken damper give some kind of a rattling, metallic sound?
No experience of that, just watched some videos from Youtube..

The torque converter should be firmly tightened to the flexplate, I did it myself when I changed the transmission..

A short question, wouldn't a bearing failure give some knocking sound?
I was wondering if one of the main bearings could be worn out.
I guess the only way is to pull down the oil pan.

if you are going to pull the pan without pulling the engine turn the crank till #1 is at tdc so the weights on the crank will not interfere with removing the pan. You'll need to raise the engine a few inches.

Hello everybody,
Today I had some time to investigate this noise a little more thoroughly.
Lifted up the whole car so it was free to move under it and listen from where the noise comes.
I'm now 99% sure that I've found where it comes from.
It seems to be the front crankshaft seal making the noise because it stops right away if I spray a bit of WD-40 on it while the engine is running.
After a while it got dry so it started to sound again but stops immediately if I spray it again.
I guess mystery solved..?
How difficult is it to replace the seal?
Have anyone of you had similar problems with the crankshaft seals?
They tend to leak if they get old, but also squeal?

Its an easy task but depends how you go about it. Best way would be to remove the timing cover so you can inspect further. Maybe replace you're worn out timing chain also. And maybe replace your water pump and make sure its not rusting thru the timing cover.

Bought a new front crankshaft seal today. Hopefully I will get it installed in a near future and get rid of that annoying noise.
I will keep you guys updated.

Hello folks,
I finally got the crankshaft seal changed yesterday.
The noise hasn't come back yet so I'm quite positive (keeping my fingers crossed) 🙂
Let's hope this was the end of this story.
Cheers!
